What are your thoughts on members advertising in their signatures.
I don't mean their forums or personal web pages but businesses.
I don't agree with it and always used to remove links from signatures and send a friendly PM stating that the forum was not to be used for free advertising.

I feel that signature advertising is good especially for forums. If you post around forums regularly and have a link in your signature when doing so it can help to promote your forum.

The only time I do not agree to links in signatures is if the person whom has posted their link in the signature on my forum does not allow me to post links in my signature on their forum. Doesn't seem fair to me that they can come on and post a link back to their forum in their signature on my forum but I can not do it back, if I find this I will remove the users link in their signature, sounds petty I know and many will think it but the way I see it is that they are getting free advertising to their forum and it's not done in a fair way as an exchange. I do links in signatures along with exchanges with other forum users.

I did state I wasn't referring to links to their own forums but links to Businesses. :)

If you allow one, then why not allow them all?

If they're affecting the community, then by all means, remove it. I wouldn't remove their signature, unless they post SPAM.

So, I guess I'm fine with it and don't really care what they put in their sig, :)

On my forum if your signature is linked to porn or anything illegal then it would be removed and the member would be banned from my site
As long as it is legal then it should be ok

The point I'm making is if they link to a business,to get normal advertising they would have to pay.
By allowing them to link in their signature your saving them money and giving them a boost on search engines.

Ah I see now, my fault mis read :) when it comes to businesses I don't allow advertising myself in signatures no. Free advertising for someone who is more than likely making money from their website and gaining backlinks for their website doesn't seem fair for a personal small forum.

I think you should re-read my message.
      Quote:

A "porn" link will most likely affect a community depending on who's in your community and the web hosting company's terms of service.
Anyway.. My messages are not telling you to allow something on your forum, assuming you own one.

I see what you're trying to say now.. It's not only business websites that makes money online.
I can own a personal website and still make money from it, while having it in my signature at your forum ( assuming you own a forum ) .
Then, that will be one extra website/forum that bypassed your strategy to stop people from making a little extra cash online ( the business websites, etc.. )

I think you need to read again :)
I said I don't mind personal websites but can you tell me your quite happy to have members with links to businesses in their signatures that even the dumbest person can work out it is not theirs ?

If it's so easy to figure out, then most likely they are spammers. I wouldn't just remove their signature, but their entire post.
And where did you hear me say that I'm "happy"..

I don't care what they have in their signature, as long as it doesn't affect my web hosting's terms and wouldn't encourage spamming.

From your comments, you're eliminating "business" websites ONLY.
If a person owns their own website for their business and actually contributes to your forum, from your comments, you'll remove it because they aren't paying for advertising. That's kind of bias..

If it's just a link, I don't really think it matters where it goes, but that's just my opinion. I do hate when people have like 10 different links or huge pics in their signature and it takes up a bunch of room.
