The Children in Need fundraising extravaganza has raised a record on-the-night total of £26 million.

The figure was announced at the end of the six-hour charity marathon at 2am.

Host Sir Terry Wogan said: "That is the greatest single total we have ever made in one night, so thank you. Thank you to the British people in these tough times to come up with that kind of money on behalf of Britain's children."

The total sum was confirmed as £26,332,334, more than £8 million more than the amount raised last year. It will now be hoped that the appeal can top the record for the final total, which was set at £40 million in 2010.

This is such a great achievement. It's great seeing that the world still has generous people in society.

This is a great amount to have raised for such a great cause :)

I agree zuinag :) there are still some good people out there and especially with the economy problems at the moment it is great to still see some generosity.

This is amazing, I saw a tweet from Steven Moffat ( the head writer of Doctor Who) that the Doctor's coat went for over 50k in auction!

Wow! That is great news :) it is great to hear that so many did so much to raise money for this cause

That is great RJH :) what kind of fundraising things did they do?

The school my children go to did a non uniform day where you had to pay a fee, also did face painting and selling cakes and games that where 10p each to play and they managed to raise £811

I hate children in need and comic relief.

A bunch of celebrities telling me to get my money out, seems wrong in my opinion.

I see where you are coming from Elseb :) they do it every year with children in need and every 2 years with comic relief and every year there always seems to be the same amount of problems that there was the last. I know that our money goes towards helping but surely the amount they have raised over the years has helped way more than what they tell us.

Especially at the moment with the situation the country is in also it can be hard for many to give to charity no matter how much it may help.
