From Incarceration Nation (CNN), TIME Magazine & The New Yorker (Adam Gopnik)

      * There are now more Americans in jail -- 6 million -- than there were in Stalin's Gulag.

      * The money that states spend on prisons has risen at six times the rate of spending on higher education over the past 20 years.

      * Since 1980, California has built one college campus and 21 prisons.

      * In 1980, the U.S. only had 150 prisoners per 100,000 citizens. The U.S. now has 760 prisoners per 100,000 citizens.
for reference: Germany has 90 per 100,000 France has 96 per 100,000 & Britain has 153 per 100,000
