Would you say Facebook is taking over forums and making them less popular?

I myself don't feel Facebook is taking over forums to be honest, mainly because there are so many differences between forums and facebook. You have more of a way of freely stating your opinion on a forum and getting to know people more on a forum than you do via Facebook.

I don't consider Facebook as a threat to forums.
You can't beat a forum for casual chat and information.

That is true, I mean you can air your views and opinions over facebook but not in a way that you can on a forum.

No I don't think so. Facebook is a socializing site and forums are much different from it.
I believe each of them have their own ways in the internet world.

Facebook is for your current friends in my opinion not to meet new friends.
Forums is for both current friends, and to meet new friends and also express your opinion freely.

I use Facebook to stay in touch with certain people but I really prefer forums.
Forums will never die, with all the new hand held devices and wireless you may even see an upswing in forum use.

I think that forums have definitely had a decline in popularity since Facebook and Twitter appeared.

Yes, they may have many differences to forums but often it's a matter of how much time people want to spend socialising online.

Also, FB and Twitter often get mentioned on television so people are more aware of their existance, when did you last hear mention of forums on tv ?

That is true SB, forums get the least amount of airtime infact no airtime online which is a shame, nowadays you don't have businesses advertising their websites online as much anymore you have then advertising their twitter and facebook pages instead which boosts interest in facebook and twitter all the more.

I really only use 4 forums now.
      Chat-Addicts is the main one.
I help with technical stuff on an Airgun Forum ( I know nothing about airguns)
And I still keep up with stuff on VB.com & VB.org

Most of the big forums are behind a business for example Overclockers.

I think Facebook and forums are two completely different things and don't see Facebook as a threat to forums at all. I use Facebook to catch up with friends and share quick statuses and pictures. I use forums to engage in conversation and meet some new people that I otherwise wouldn't be able to on Facebook.

Facebook and forums offer different services. Facebook allow people to connect with friends and just chat, whereas forums have much more of a focus. However, I can see the popularity for forums fading, as those who would have used forums in the past are now on Twitter, and such.

I think that there was a big decline in forums since the beginnings of myspace and facebook. When I was in middle school and probably the beginning of high school, I used to post on forums a lot. Then when myspace came out, I stopped until just recently.

I agree that forums and Facebook are not similar sites. Forums are mainly for discussing or chatting about different topics. Although in Facebook, members could chat and talk about anything too, there are no specific threads and topics and so it was not that easy to find there someone who likes to talk about the same topic that you would like to discuss on certain moments.

Taking over forums? No. Forums that have a real niche are still popular and it depends on who owns and runs the forums as well, however, people spend more time on Facebook than forums IMO.

I also don't think Facebook is a threat to Discussion Forums. Facebook is just a social networking site mostly used to catching up with your friends or sharing pics etc.
