I was watching today on the news how the government in the UK are hoping to get the law changed so that parents who force their children into marriage will receive a prison sentence.

Do you agree with this and do you think it will make a difference?

Got to be proved first which unless the Girl/Boy gives evidence against their parents won't be easy.

That true APS if the child does not give evidence against the parents then there is not much the courts can do

I'm not from the UK but I have to agree on this. What kid would be willing to turn their folks in for something like this?! Sure, had I been that young and forced to be married I'd most likely be pi**ed as well, but would I want to turn my parents in for it? Most likely not!

Not like much kids have free will these days. I have no love life so having a pre arranged marriage don't sound to bad to me.

I say just change the law which gives kids the freedom to back out if they wish.

Meh, I don't have much interest in finding a spouse to share the rest of my life with either. While I wouldn't like being forced to recite wedding vows, the preplanning end of it I wouldn't mind. I mean heck, you can preplan your own funeral, so relatives know just how you want things done, so preplanning a wedding wouldn't be half bad either.

I'm for it. Nobody should be forced into a marriage with someone they don't love.

I sort of agree with you there. Just because a couple looks like they're in love and having a good time with one another, that doesn't always mean they're destined to be together "till death do us part"! It takes time to find a mate, and some parents just don't seem to get it.

I concur with it and advocate it... because it a very reasonable price to pay for it. I wish twas thus in China too. Asian people alway arrange marriages & etc.

For me, an arranged marriage is acceptable, but a forced one is pitiless. The former has consent while the latter takes your right as an individual. As I see in my country, forced marriages are justified on tradition and religious grounds. Some parents are still tied to these and seriously think it's for the common good. Subjecting parents to prison seems to be emotionally and morally impossible, but parents must be enlightened that coercing their children into an unwanted union is CRUELTY.
