      So yes, we all know he wrote sonnets and plays and everything and sold them to the court. I don't really admire him... What's so great about his writtings, compared to some French authors'?

      What people think of different writers is all a matter of personal taste.
      I don't read Shakespeare but that doesn't mean his work is not good.
      I couldn't even name a French writer.

      I studied Shakespeare many years ago and have forgotten so much. His style is misunderstood today. He injected humor in a very dry manner. An example is in scene 2, Capulets Orchard of Romeo & Juliet, Juliet speaks to Romeo, then as she pauses, he asks "Shall I hear more or shall I speak at this?". This is, in modern terms, the equivalent of "Are you done blabbering yet?". The language used in literature back then isn't understood today either. That also has to do with the lack of interest. Wherefore art thou means Why are you. The movie "West Side Story" is an adaption of Romeo & Juliet. Very good play done in a modern understanding.
