I was reading today on Sky News about children having a mobile phone by the time they are 5 years old. I personally feel that is a shocking age to be giving a child a fully working mobile phone for themselves. I have a 5 year old myself and a 4 year old who will be 5 years next year and I have not even thought about giving them a mobile phone or purchasing one. My 7 year old daughter who will be 8 in October and my eldest son who is 9 and will be 10 in February 2014 are always asking me for their own but I really do not see a reason for them to have one yet as they are always with me a lot of the time unless they are out playing in the street or walking home from school and that is just my eldest who walks home on his own now from school.

I remember I was 13 and in secondary school before I could have a mobile phone and that was on pay as you go and I was told only texting unless it was an emergency then I could call.

What are your thoughts about 5 year olds having mobile phones?

They definitely are at that age I will admit. I was not allowed a mobile phone until I was 13 years old. My eldest kids both now 8 and 9 (eldest is nearly 10) keep asking me for a mobile phone because their friends have one. I say when they get into secondary school that is a time to have a mobile phone.

      I was probably about 40 before I had 1.
I reckon 12/13 is about right.

I didn't get my first phone until I was 17 and was doing more after school club activities. They were also finally getting cheap and unlimited texting just came out.

I probably won't get my kids a cell phone until they start doing activities where they would need a phone, but that probably won't be until their teens.

I didn't get one until I was 31 so I don't even see why a kid would want one really. I find them annoying as hell now. I couldn't imagine being a teenager again with a phone where I could be called by my parents anytime anywhere. That sounds like a bad horror movie. :bounce:

I might be biased because I'm younger than you, but I don't see what's wrong with texting.

It could be that. Texting is fine as long as your not trying to have an entire conversation that should be done by a real phone call. That's when I find it annoying as it would be so much faster if you just call me if you have a lot to say. :D

Well sometimes it's more convenient instead of wondering when that person is free. Just shoot them a text and they'll answer when they're free.

Yeah that would be fine, but no one does that for me. LOL. They could say "hey are you free?" instead of doing the total conversation thing.

I don't really see what's wrong with that, you don't have to answer back.

Unless you have the kind of lifestyle where you are busy and need instant contact, there is no reason for a kid that young to have a phone. They don't need one till at least their teens.

Well my kids are now 18 & 23 & when they were aged 4-5 no way would i have even
thought about buying them a phone..you see my kids played with toys like cars
      & dolls etc,they were loved ( still are ) & sure didn't need or want no gadgets..Kids
& parents are under so much pressure to have the same as others, shame really
their childhood will be gone before they know it...

Yeah but even then they may send several texts, which gets annoying when you are busy and the phone keeps going off.

But really I don't think a child needs a phone until they hit high school where they start spending less time at home and more time out.

Can't you just turn your phone off until you're free?
