US president Barack Obama has helped a fifth grader skip school.

The American president penned an absence note for 11-year-old Tyler Sullivan, who ditched his classes on Friday (June 1) to see Obama speak at the Honeywell factory in Minneapolis, according to local NBC affiliate KARE 11.

"Mr. Ackerman, please excuse Tyler ... he was with me!" the note reads.

The letter was handwritten on presidential stationary, and Sullivan said that watching the president speak was "pretty exciting".

Last month, Obama awarded a number of individuals the Medal of Freedom, including Bob Dylan, Toni Morrison and Madeleine Albright.

Will Smith recently declared that if Obama's life were made into a movie, it would be the worst screenplay ever read because no-one would believe it if it hadn't happened.
