Microsoft ready to Cash In on Big Gamble

      By Tony Bradley, PCWorld

Microsoft revealed the date this week when it plans to start collecting on its bets. As of October 26--the official release date for Windows 8--all the cards will be on the table, and we will see if the gamble will pay off or not.......

      Any thoughts on it.

My husband and I have it on our computers and most impressed with it. Spend $40 and you have a genuine windows 8.

My main concern with Windows 8 is that it's more or less designed to cater to tablets and phones. I don't really think it'll be that great of an OS for a PC anymore but as long as I can still run my games fine without problems I have no issue with upgrading. I do have a touchscreen desktop so i would think the touch functionalities and UI would be nice for it but still, i'm a gamer first and foremost and if I can' game on Windows 8 the same way I do on Windows 7 then I'm going to just stick with Windows 7.

$40 sounds like a steal. I wonder if it's gonna be like Vista where 2 or 3 people said it sucked and everyone jumps on the bandwagon and citing jargon that they don't understand?

So they are threating us by taken away Internet explorer and office huh? Same old proprietary strong-arming. I say let them keep them. I don't actually know anyone who uses IE and The older versions of office should do the trick as long as you stay away from the newer encoding. If not there is always LibreOffice.

$40 is much more reasonable than there previous offers but I still wouldn't call it a steal. do you get the same stuff as in previous versions? I just hope this isn't a web-based OS as they intended.

I am using the windows 8 and I am just working my computer the same as before. Have the same programmes and very happy with it. I believe when it is released the new version you have the choice of the apps or how it looks on Windows 7.

Agree $40 is reasonable that is why I am taking advantage of it.

Thanks for telling me about LibreOffice. Will take a look as haven't heard of that one.

So has anyone actually bought it yet ?
To take advantage of the Upgrade offer you must be running a genuine copy of windows already.
I'm undecided at the moment .

I am currently running genuine windows but undecided at the moment as to whether I want to upgrade or stay. Many have great things to say about it but then some are not as great. Am I right in saying that it is only £15 to upgrade if you have a genuine windows running already?

I completely agree with you APS, I am more than happy with XP it does everything I want and need it to do. I feel installing a newer version of windows will most likely slow my computer down and cause endless compatibility issues, as these are things that microsoft fail to fix before releasing a shining new version of their operating system :)

The only problem with XP is that Microsoft is cutting support for it in 2014, so treasure that last year.

Well it's not hard to research it now since it's been released. You can probably go to your local computer store and check it out.
