Microsoft is pursuing free-to-play games for Xbox 360, it has been claimed.

According to a Develop report, Microsoft has approached several developers regarding free-to-play games.

To support the games, the Xbox operating system will apparently incorporate a micro-transaction service to allow for in-game items to be instantly exchanged for Microsoft Points as payment.

Steam launched five free-to-play games on the service last week, and Valve's own Team Fortress 2 became free-to-play earlier today.

The trend of free-to-play games began on Facebook and on mobile devices, with games that had no initial cost but were supported through micro-transaction payments for in-game items.

Microsoft has not issued a public statement regarding free-to-play games on the Xbox 360.
